In a hot air balloon, high-velocity air from below creates a strong force on the balloon’s envelope, causing it to bend in the same direction.

As a result, the envelope will continue to bend for some time, which can lead to the hot air balloon experiencing lift, and consequently a loss of control, which can cause the balloon to pop and the basket to fall.

What to do when turbulence occurs?

Great question! So far, I have been flying hot air balloons for about a year, now. I really enjoy it. I love being out in the middle of nowhere, with nothing but the wind and the clouds and the sky.

Some people get so excited talking about hot air balloons that they become almost delusional. They believe they can fly wherever they want or even move objects with just the power of their thoughts. This is a myth!

The FAA has strict guidelines on air balloon flights and requires the operators of these hot air balloon to adhere to a set of flight rules. Is there any action the FAA will take?

According to Federal Aviation Administration, yes, hot air balloons can fly up to 10,000 feet above ground or 1,000 feet above clouds.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires any balloon flying above the clouds to have a call sign, have a flight plan, and have a way to be search and rescued.

What happens when a balloonist breaks FAA rules?

Flying an air balloon over populated areas can be dangerous, and it’s also against FAA rules. Flight instructor, and avid balloonist, Russell Dutton, recently violated FAA rules by flying his balloon in front of the Oakland airport.

He brought it down safely, and has since begun checking to see if there are any injuries, but has been banned from the airfield for life.
